METEOROLOGIST AND ATMOSPHERIC PHOTOGRAPHER ANDREW PRITCHARD

On Monday, April 8th, 2024 my wife Sophie and our pup Henry zig zagged southeast across the familiar back roads of Illinois into the zone of totality for the total solar eclipse. Like I do while storm chasing, my goal was to find a quiet place in the middle of nowhere away from crowds. Letting traffic and vibes guide me into the zone, I made one final stop to look at the map and pick out THE SPOT. I found a little dead end maintenance road alongside a railroad and knew it was the one. The rest, you know. Storm season will get rolling soon, but this was an absolutely out of this world experience that my brain is still processing, much like my brain 24 hours after the best tornadoes of my life.

SKYDRAMA.NET | On February 27th, 2024 an enhanced risk with a bimodal severe weather setup presented itself across the Midwest. Across northern and central Illinois a dryline was forecast to arc through the area during the late-afternoon sparking isolated supercells. A cap would keep a lid on things until near sunset, but Colin and I spent several hours with tornado warned supercells that produced funnel clouds and brief tornadoes from Mendota, IL into the Chicago suburbs. One of my lifelong best friends and I planned a camping trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes on the first weekend in October way back in the spring. When I first discovered Sleeping Bear Dunes the landscape seemed fake in photos on the internet and in books, and I decided I needed to check this place out. Of course my visit was coincided by the first big fall storm system of the season, which brought showers and thunderstorms, high winds, and much colder temperatures than the area experienced in the weeks prior. Storm observation VLOG #42! One of my favorite storms of 2023! Another Friday evening with nothing on the calendar and a chance for severe thunderstorms in my backyard. I did one of my favorite things in the world to do - meander west down Highway 136, watch a thunderstorm develop from clear air, zig zag through the central Illinois grid and photograph the storm's frontside, then let it run me over at dusk. Strobing lightning show on the way home sealed it with a kiss. Be sure to like & subscribe so you don't miss the next storm!
